NAIDOC WEEK – 4-11 JULY 2021

Celebrating Alice Nampijinpa Michaels

The theme for NAIDOC week this year is “Heal Country!”. This theme serves as a call to seek greater protections for lands, waters and sacred sites and cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration and destruction.

NAIDOC week is a wonderful opportunity for all Australians to embrace and celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and history.

Australian Aboriginal Artists Assorted Three Pack

At Apiary Made, we are so incredibly proud of our Australian Aboriginal Artists range of beeswax wraps. This special pack was created in collaboration with the Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation. and features three paintings by Artist, Alice Nampijinpa Henwood Michaels.

About The Artist – Alice Nampijinpa Michaels

Alice Nampijinpa Henwood Michaels was born at Mt Doreen Station, a cattle station 55km west of Yuendumu, in the Northern Territory. Her father worked as a stockman on the Station, while Alice and her family would hunt and gather food. Occasionally, when they came across traditional Aboriginal people, Alice and her family would bring them food, blankets and clothes. With the advent of the Northern Territory Land Rights Act in 1976, many Indigenous people who had been forced to live in communities such as Yuendumu began to move back into their traditional lands.

In 1983, Alice and her family moved to Nyirripi, a community 160km southwest of Yuendumu. She has lived both at Nyirripi and Emu Bore, an outstation further west of Nyirripi, ever since. Alice has been painting with Warlukurlangu Artists Aboriginal Corporation, an Aboriginal owned and governed art centre located in Yuendumu, since 2006. Alice paints her father’s country at Pirlinyanu, about 170km west of Yuendumu and her grandmother’s country Lappi Lappi, near Lake Hazlett, northwest of Lake Mackay in Western Australia. When she’s not painting, Alice likes to go hunting with her grandchildren for goanna, bush tomatoes and sweet potato.

For every one of our Australian Aboriginal Artists Assorted Three Pack of Wraps sold, $2.15 goes to the Warlukurlangu Artists Corporation who distribute money to the artist and to projects the Corporation runs.
